My approach to therapy is based on Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT). A core idea in ACT is that trying too hard to get rid of or control our emotions tends to backfire. Instead of trying to get rid of unwanted thoughts and feelings (e.g., anxiety & depression), I will help you learn to react differently to them so that you can keep your focus on living a meaningful and fulfilling life based on what’s important to you. We will work together to set meaningful goals to address your concerns - whether they relate to life transitions, depression, anxiety, body image, grief/loss, job or academic stress, or gender & sexuality. I primarily provide individual therapy with late teens and adults. I specialize in working transgender and non-binary youth and their families on matters related to gender identity. Transgender clients and family members seeking assessment or counseling services can expect a safe space, and respectful, non-pathologizing, collaborative care. If you feel like you may be a good fit, feel free to contact me. I will follow-up with you for a brief (10-15 minute) phone consultation where I can also answer any questions you might have. Specialties: For anxiety, I want to help you focus on those areas of your life you care about most and help you live your life fully despite anxious thoughts, feelings, and sensations. The truth is we may not ever truly know the "root" cause for your anxiety. However, we do know what is effective for treating anxiety: exposure therapy and doing something about it. Credentials & Experience: I have extensive training, research, and clinical experience working with transgender and gender-diverse youth, adults, and families. Also licensed in CA and NV and authorized to practice in 40-plus other states.
"The more specific your concern, the more likely you are to need a specific form of therapy or a specialist with training or experience in that area. For general depression and anxiety, I like to work from an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy approach. For more specific types of anxiety, I provide exposure-based treatment."
