About

I treat people who suffer from panic disorders (and many other problems) with cognitive-behavioral therapy. I've studied 6 years of CBT at the Menninger Foundation and I have also studied at the Beck Institute in Philadelphia. Panic is basically a "false alarm". Panic happens when a person's body is producing powerful fight or flight chemicals at the wrong time. The body responds as if there is an emergency when there is no physical threat. The intense changes in heart rate and breathing etc. become subject to catastrophic misinterpretations, like "I'm dying" or "I'm losing control". These scary thoughts produce even more chemicals. Hopefully, I'll help you change your understanding and your reactions to panic. As this happens suffering fades. Scary thoughts produce more adrenaline. To solve panic, we need to change your understanding of it. You will learn to know and believe that though the symptoms feel dangerous they are not and you'll learn effective strategies for managing panic. Our offices are private and comfortable. My patients say that it feels more like being in a safe comfortable living room than in an office. I think my therapy dog and the wooded view add to the relaxed feeling. --- I am the president of Shunga Creek Mental Health, a group of independent professionals. We have a psychiatrist an ARNP and 6 therapists. Specialties: Some people suffer from anxiety & panic for years. They cope with it by avoiding stressful situations. Their world becomes small, and they think of themselves as weak, suffering from medical issues, or crazy. These catastrophic thoughts produce more panic chemicals. I help people understand/solve these issues, stop suffering, and become their best selves. I'm with you the whole journey. Credentials & Experience: I earned my MSW from the University of Denver. I'm skilled in CBT, family, Gestalt & EMDR therapy. I wrote False Alarm- about solving panic.

"I am well-trained in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). I like to think of CBT as common-sense therapy. I believe most problems are solvable, and I know that talking things out helps. I frequently hear from my clients that our talks help them to feel more hopeful. Jim Woodward LSCSW"
