Almost every morning I wake up with a pit in my stomach, racing thoughts, and immediate dread before I even get out of bed. Why does it happen in the morning, and how can I stop it?

I tried the sunlight trick and delaying coffee—it actually made a huge difference. The mornings are still tough, but the physical panic is much lower.

Morning anxiety is heavily linked to the Cortisol Awakening Response (CAR). Normally, our cortisol levels spike about 30-45 minutes after waking to give us the energy to start the day. In individuals with chronic stress or anxiety, this spike can be exaggerated, manifesting as intense physical anxiety and dread. To manage this, avoid looking at your phone or consuming news immediately upon waking. Instead, get direct sunlight in your eyes within the first 15 minutes of waking (which helps regulate the circadian rhythm and cortisol curve), and delay caffeine intake for 90-120 minutes.
