Rent is eating my savings and I'm losing sleep

I moved to a new city for a job that pays okay but the rent here is insane. Almost half my paycheck goes to a tiny studio. I've been dipping into savings every month and I'm down to my last few thousand. The stress is making it hard to focus at work and I wake up at 3am every night worrying about money. Has anyone else been in this situation? How do you cope without going crazy?

I hear how overwhelming this is. Financial stress, especially housing, is one of the top contributors to anxiety and sleep disruption. First, it's important to validate that this is a real and difficult situation. For the short term, try breaking the problem into smaller steps: review your budget, look for any potential cost reductions (like utilities or subscriptions), and consider if a temporary income boost is feasible. For sleep, avoid screens before bed and try a grounding exercise: name 5 things you can see, 4 you can touch, etc. Long term, if the rent-to-income ratio stays above 30%, you may need to explore relocating or a different job. Please consider speaking with a financial counselor and a therapist to manage the emotional toll. You are not alone in this.

One thing that helped me was negotiating a rent reduction. I found 3 similar apartments in the building that were listed for $100 less and showed it to the landlord. He actually dropped it by $75. Also, look into rental assistance programs in your city. Some have emergency funds. Also tbh, side hustling with food delivery gave me a little breathing room.

Oh man, I feel you. I was in the exact same spot last year. Moved to Seattle for a tech job and my rent was $2000 for a place with no dishwasher. I had panic attacks every time I opened my banking app. It sucks. Have you considered a roommate? That helped me tons.
