I am getting stress hives, tension headaches, and IBS flare-ups, but mentally I don't feel "stressed." I feel like I'm handling my workload fine. Why is my body reacting this way?

Additionally, the gut-brain axis is a major factor here. Stress alters gut motility and the microbiome, which is why IBS is so heavily linked to chronic stress. Gut-directed hypnotherapy and regulating the nervous system before eating (taking 3 deep breaths before a meal) can significantly help.

What you are describing is somatization—when psychological distress manifests as physical symptoms. The mind and body are not separate; they communicate via the vagus nerve and the HPA axis. Often, highly resilient or "type A" individuals intellectualize their stress. Your brain says "we can handle this," but your nervous system is absorbing the allostatic load. Your body is essentially keeping the score. Treatment involves somatic practices—tuning into physical sensations rather than just intellectualizing. Somatic experiencing, yoga, and deep tissue release can help discharge this trapped physiological stress.
