How to distinguish between burnout and depression?

I have no energy, I'm cynical about my job, and I feel ineffective. How do I know if I'm just burned out from work, or if this has turned into actual depression?

This makes sense. I took a 2-week vacation and still felt hopeless. That was the sign for me to get a clinical evaluation.

Clinically, burnout is considered an occupational phenomenon, while depression is a clinical disorder. Burnout is typically characterized by three dimensions: emotional exhaustion, depersonalization/cynicism, and a reduced sense of personal accomplishment, specifically tied to your work or caregiving roles. If you take a vacation or change jobs, burnout often lifts. Depression, however, is pervasive. It follows you into your personal life, affecting your self-worth, sleep, appetite, and ability to experience pleasure anywhere. If your feelings of hopelessness extend beyond work to your entire life, it may be depression.
