Grief that isn't going away after a year

I lost my father 14 months ago. Everyone expects me to be "over it" or moving on, but the grief still hits me in huge waves that knock me off my feet. Is something wrong with me?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with you. The idea that grief has a neat timeline of stages ending in "acceptance" within a year is a cultural myth. Grief does not shrink over time; rather, your life slowly grows around it. However, if the grief remains so intense that you cannot function in daily life (unable to work, socialize, or care for yourself) long past a year, you may be experiencing Prolonged Grief Disorder (formerly complex grief). This happens when the natural mourning process gets "stuck," and specific grief-focused therapies can help untangle it.

My therapist told me "grief is just love with nowhere to go." It helped me accept that I will probably grieve in some way forever, and that is okay.
