Doomscrolling is ruining my life but I can't stop

I spend 4-5 hours a day scrolling through negative news and short videos. I hate it, it makes me depressed, but my thumb just opens the apps automatically. How do I break the cycle?

Turning my screen to grayscale was the biggest game-changer. My phone suddenly looked so boring.

Doomscrolling exploits the brain's evolutionary negativity bias—our ancestors survived by paying close attention to threats. Combined with the variable reward schedule of infinite scrolling, it creates a powerful dopamine loop. To break this, relying on willpower alone will fail. You must use environmental design. Create "friction" between you and the behavior: delete the apps from your phone, use website blockers, or turn your phone screen to grayscale (which drastically reduces the dopamine hit from colorful UI). Replace the habit with a high-friction analog activity (like reading a physical book).
