I have an important project due. I am sitting at my desk, screaming at myself internally to start, but I am completely paralyzed. I just scroll instead. People call me lazy, but it feels physical.

The distinction between laziness and executive dysfunction is so important. Laziness is a choice; this is a neurobiological barrier.

This is not laziness; it is executive dysfunction, specifically "ADHD paralysis." The ADHD brain has a chronic deficit of dopamine and norepinephrine, neurotransmitters required to initiate tasks. When a task feels overwhelming, under-stimulating, or lacks an immediate deadline, the brain physically struggles to "change gears." To overcome this, you must manufacture dopamine or urgency. Try the "5-Minute Rule" (commit to doing it for only 5 minutes), body doubling (working alongside someone else), or breaking the task down into micro-steps (e.g., "Open a Word document," not "Write the essay").

Body doubling saves my life on a weekly basis. Just having someone on Zoom working quietly forces my brain into gear.
